A common question I get asked is, “How can small group maths tuition be personalised if it’s not one-to-one?” This is a fair question, and I’m excited to explain how small group maths tuition works and why it’s such an effective approach for improving GCSE Maths results.

After years of trying to meet the needs of 32 students in a class at once, across multiple lessons a day, being able to personalise tuition in small group maths tuition is a dream come true. It’s not just because the group sizes are limited to 6 students, but because of the flexibility, time, and space that small group maths tuition offers. This personalised approach allows me to provide targeted support and tailored guidance that I wasn’t able to offer in a larger classroom setting. Since leaving the classroom, this has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my work, as I can truly meet the needs of each student.

Personalising GCSE Maths with Small Group Tuition

In my small group maths tuition sessions, I break down complex concepts into manageable chunks, offering support and encouragement at every step. What I love most is being able to witness every student’s small wins. Each win builds their self-belief and boosts their confidence, which empowers them to keep pushing forward. And if a student stumbles along the way, the beauty of small group maths tuition is that I’m there to help them get back on track with personalised feedback and support.

So, how do I structure my small group maths tuition to make sure it’s personalised for each student? Here’s an insight into my approach:

1. Focus-5 Revision Method: Tailored for GCSE Maths

Whether in one-to-one tuition or small group maths tuition, I always implement my Focus-5 Revision Method. This method has been specifically designed for GCSE Maths (not a generic strategy that works for every subject). It helps students work smarter, not harder. You can read more about how the Focus-5 method works here.

Students begin their journey with me by completing a past paper. This may be a full paper or half-paper, depending on whether they’re in Year 9, 10, or 11. I review all the answers from the students in the group and identify 5 common topics that need focus. This list of topics becomes our primary focus for the next half term, and we revisit them throughout each session.

2. Personalising Group Tuition with Tailored Needs

Even though the students are in small groups, I also make sure to address individual needs. If a student has a topic they need more help with, I incorporate this into our review questions at the start of each session. This ensures that all students, regardless of whether they’re in a group or not, receive personalised tuition for their specific challenges.

I run multiple GCSE Higher Maths groups, so if a student needs extra help with a particular topic, they can join another session where that topic is being reviewed. This level of flexibility in small group maths tuition ensures that students are always getting the support they need.

3. Personalised Revision Lists and Resources for Every Student

After the initial assessment, I provide each student with a personalised revision list, guiding them through their independent study. This list includes online video tutorials, additional practice questions, and exam-style questions. By using these resources, students can reinforce what they’ve learned and test their understanding outside of the sessions.

4. Interactive, Personalised Tuition in Small Groups

During my small group maths tuition sessions, I create an interactive experience where students submit their answers via a private chat with me. Their responses are visible only to me, which allows me to provide personalised feedbackand assess their understanding without distractions. If a student is struggling with a particular question, I can give further explanations or additional examples to make sure they understand before moving on to the next topic.

This approach ensures that small group maths tuition remains tailored to each student’s needs, offering real-time support while keeping the group dynamics positive and collaborative.

5. A Supportive Environment for GCSE Maths Success

One of the greatest benefits of small group maths tuition is the balance between group learning and individual attention. I maintain small class sizes, which means I can offer personalised feedback while also fostering a sense of community where students learn from each other. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and support each other, which helps them build confidence and collaborative problem-solving skills.

Why Small Group Maths Tuition Works for GCSE Maths

The combination of my Focus-5 method, personalised revision resources, and interactive small group sessionscreates an environment where students feel supported and empowered. By breaking down complex topics into smaller, more manageable chunks and providing real-time feedback, I help my students build confidence and develop the skills needed to excel in GCSE Maths.

I believe that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, and small group maths tuition provides the personalised, tailored experience that helps students reach their full potential in GCSE Maths.
